Occupancy

The proportion of a product occupied or used, typically calculated as a percentage. Occupancy is the percentage of available rooms that were sold during a specified period of time. Occupancy is calculated by dividing the number of rooms sold by rooms available. Occupancy = Rooms Sold / Rooms Available. This metric can also be applied to other products e.g. restaurant seats, meeting rooms.

Offer

Intersection of the sell price and the product (inventory type), including all terms and conditions (price and availability), resulting in something that can be sold.

Offer Management System

The means by which certain rules are managed, which can alter the price, availability and distribution of products and attributes.

Business model where the guest does not know which product or brand is being booked before purchase. They know the rate, but not the product. Alternately, the phrase may be used whereby the guest may not know the individual component price of a bundled package.

OPERA

A Property Management System that provides all the tools a hotel staff needs for doing their day-to-day jobs – handling reservations, checking guests in and out, assigning rooms and managing room inventory, accommodating the needs of in-house guests, and handling accounting and billing. The property management software is configurable to each property’s specific requirements and operates in either single-property or multi-property mode, with all properties in an enterprise sharing a single database.

Opera Xchange Interface

A switch between HOLIDEX® Plus and OPERA Property Management System (PMS). Both OPERA and HOLIDEX® Plus maintains a separate inventory for individual and group reservations. With the two-way interface, both inventories are updated instantaneously, if the connection is fine and defaults and conversion codes have been set-up correctly.

A database used to integrate raw data from multiple sources for additional operations on the data. The data is then passed to the data warehouse for reporting.

Opt-In

A programme or offer that hotel(s) must explicitly opt-in, in order to participate.

Option Date

The date given to an conference/organiser agent to make a decision (i.e. confirmation or cancellation) on a group booking. The hotel cannot release this space prior to this date, only in extreme circumstances.

Opt-Out

A programme or offer in which hotel(s) are automatically included to participate, but may choose to remove themselves by opting-out.

Organic Search

Listings on search engine results pages that appear because of their relevance to the search terms, as opposed to appearing based on a paid advertisement.

Organisational Help Topic

A help topic that presents other topics organised in a specific way. This can include Tables of Contents, Indices, FAQs, New Topics, etc.

OTA Affiliate

An Online Travel Agency (OTA) that has not directly contracted with IHG, however has contracted with an IHG certified OTA.

OTA Commission Cost

An estimation of commission amounts paid to online travel agencies whether through net rate or post-paid commissions.

Out of Order

Status applied to a guest room (or other product) when not available for sale, typically due to damage or renovation. The status is applied to the inventory item (e.g. room 101, jet ski 6), and it is deducted from the hotel inventory.

Status applied to a guest room (or other product) when they are available for sale, but temporarily unable to be consumed. The status is applied to the inventory item (e.g. room 101, jet ski 6), however it is not deducted from the hotel inventory.

Overbooking Level

The number of inventory units that a hotel may oversell during a given inventory period.

Overbooking

A hotel choosing to take reservations for more inventory items than they physically have for a time period, because they expect to receive cancellations, no shows or wash which will enable them to accommodate all guests with reservations.

Override

An exemption to a business rule that can be granted by specific roles on a case-by-case basis. Overrides allow for an exemption to a rule when the rule is executed. Overriding a rule does not prevent the rule from running in the future.
